The Question and its Answer

유일한 질문과 그 해답

There is only one question. And once you know the answer to that question there are no more to ask. That one question is the Original Question. And to that Original Question there is only one Final Answer. But between that Question and its Answer there are innumerable false answers.

오직 하나의 질문만이 있다. 그대가 이 질문에 대한 답만 알면, 더이상 물어볼 질문이 없다. 이 하나의 질문은 바로 근원적 질문(Original Question)이다. 이 근원적 질문에는 하나의 최종적 해답(Final Answer)만이 있다. 그러나 그 질문과 그 해답 사이에는 무수한 거짓 답들이 있다.

Out of the depths of unbroken Infinity arose the Question, Who am I? and to that Question there is only one Answer—I am God!

끊임없는 무한함의 심연으로부터 ‘나는 누구인가?’라는 질문이 솟아 나왔다; 그리고 그 질문에 대한 해답은 오직 하나뿐이다 – 나는 신이다!

God is Infinite; and His shadow, too, is infinite. Reality is Infinite in its Oneness; Illusion is infinite in its manyness. The one Question arising from the Oneness of the Infinite wanders through an infinite maze of answers which are distorted echoes of Itself resounding from the hollow forms of infinite nothingness.

There is only one Original Question and one Original Answer to it. Between the Original Question and the Original Answer there are innumerable false answers. These false answers—such as, I am stone, I am bird, I am animal, I am man, I am woman, I am great, I am small—are, in turn received, tested and discarded until the Question arrives at the right and Final Answer, I AM GOD.

God Alone Is

Infinite consciousness is infinite. It can never lessen at any point in time or space. Infinite consciousness being infinite includes every aspect of consciousness. Unconsciousness is one of the aspects of infinite consciousness. Thus infinite consciousness includes unconsciousness. It sustains, covers, pierces through and provides an end to unconsciousness—which flows from, and is consumed by, infinite consciousness.

무한한 의식은 무한하다. 이 의식은 어느 시간이나 공간에서도 결코 줄어들지 않는다. 무한한 의식은 무한하기에 의식의 모든 측면들을 포함한다. 무의식(unconsciousness)도 무한한 의식의 한 측면이다. 따라서 무한한 의식은 무의식을 포함한다. 무한한 의식은 무의식을 유지하고, 그 속에 편재하고 관통하며, 결국 무의식의 종말을 마련한다. – 즉, 무의식은 무한한 의식으로부터 흘러나와 무한한 의식에 의해 소멸된다.

I assert unequivocally that I am infinite consciousness; and I can make this assertion because I am infinite consciousness. I am everything and I am beyond everything.

I am ever conscious that I am you, while you are never conscious that I am in you. Daily I support you and share your consciousness. Now I want you to uphold me, so that one day you can share my consciousness.

나는 ‘내가 그대임’을 항상 의식한다; 그러나 그대는 ‘내가 그대 안에 있음’을 전혀 의식하지 못한다. 나는 매일 그대와 그대의 의식을 공유하며, 그대를 지탱한다. 이제 나는 그대가 항상 나를 받들고 놓지 않기를 바란다; 언젠가 그대도 나의 의식을 공유할 수 있도록 말이다.

For man, unconscious of actually possessing the never-ending continuously conscious experience that God is everything and all else is nothing, everything is everything. Air is. Water is. Fire is. Earth is. Light is. Darkness is. Stone is. Iron is. Vegetation is. Insect is. Fish is. Bird is. Beast is. Man is. Good is. Bad is. Pain is. Pleasure is. There is no end to what is—until he arrives at nothing is and instantaneously he realizes God is.

‘신이 모든 것이며 그 외 다른 것들은 무(nothing)’라는 의식적 체험을 영원히 지님에도 불구하고, 이 사실을 의식하지 못하는 인간에게는 현상세계의 모든 것들이 그의 모든 것(有, everything)이다. 그에게는 공기도 존재하고, 물도 존재하고, 불도 존재하며, 땅도 존재한다. 빛, 어둠, 돌, 쇠도 존재하며, 식물, 곤충, 물고기도 존재한다. 새, 짐승, 인간도 존재하며, 선과 악, 고통과 쾌락도 존재한다. 인간에게는 끝도 없이 많은 것들이 존재한다. – 언젠가 그가 ‘모든 것이 무이다'(nothing is)라는 의식에 도달하여, 그 순간 ‘신만이 있다’는 것을 깨달을 때까지.

It is not easy for man to accept and keep on accepting under all circumstances that God is. Even after his firm acceptance that God is, it is supremely difficult, though not impossible, for him to realize what he has firmly accepted. And realization means that instead of being fully conscious that he is man, he becomes fully conscious that he is God, was God, has always been God and will ever remain God.

신의 존재성(God is)을 받아들이는 것과, 어떤 상황에서도 그 사실을 지속적으로 수용하는 것은 인간에게 쉬운 일이 아니다. 신의 존재성을 확고히 받아들인 후에도 스스로의 확신을 깨닫는다는 것은, 불가능하진 않지만 극히 어려운 일이다. 깨달음(realization)이란, ‘자신이 인간’임을 완전히 의식하는 대신에 ‘자신이 신’임을 완전히 의식하는 것이다; 자신이 언제나 신이었고, 신이며, 앞으로도 영원히 신으로 남을 것이란 사실을 완전히 의식하는 것이다.

Knowingly or unknowingly man is ever seeking the Goal, which is to realize his true Self. The very nearest and innermost to man is his Soul, but the humour of it is he feels far, far away from It. There appears to be no end to his journeys towards the Goal through the numberless highways and by-ways of life and death, although in fact there is no distance at all to cover. Having achieved full consciousness as man, he has already arrived at his destination, for he now possesses the capacity to become fully conscious of his Soul. Still he is unable to realize this divine destiny because his consciousness remains completely focussed in his inverted, limited, finite self—the Mind—which, ironically has been the means of achieving consciousness.

인간은 스스로가 알든 모르든, ‘자신의 참나를 깨달으려는’ 목표를 늘상 추구하고 있다. 인간에게 가장 가까우며 가장 깊은 곳에 있는 것은, 그의 영혼(Soul)이다; 재밌는 일은, 인간이 자신의 영혼과 아득히 멀리 있다고 느낀다는 것이다. 그 목표를 향한 여러 여행들은 끝이 없는 듯 보인다; 그 여행길은 생사 윤회의 무수한 고속도로와 샛길들을 거친다; 그러나 사실 이 여행은 거쳐야 할 어떤 거리도 없는 길이다. 인간으로서 ‘완성된 의식'(full consciousness)을 갖춘 이는 이제 자신의 영혼을 완전히 의식할 수 있는 수용력을 지녔기 때문에, 이미 목적지에 도달한 것이나 다름없다. 그런데도 그는 여전히 자신의 뒤집히고, 제한되고, 한정된 자아, 즉 마음(Mind)에 몰두해 있기 때문에, 자신의 신성적 운명(divine destiny)을 깨닫지 못하는 것이다. — 여기서 역설적인 사실은, 인간이 ‘완성된 의식’을 달성할 수 있었던 수단도 마음이었다는 것이다.

Before he can know Who he is, man has to unlearn the mass of illusory knowledge he has burdened himself with on the interminable journey from unconsciousness to consciousness. It is only through love that you can begin to unlearn, and, eventually, put an end to all that you do not know. God-love penetrates all illusion, while no amount of illusion can dim God-love. Start by learning to love God by beginning to love those whom you cannot. You will find that in serving others you are serving yourself. The more you remember others with kindness and generosity, the less you remember yourself; and when you completely forget yourself, you find me as the Source of all Love.

자신의 정체가 누구인지 알기 위해서, 인간은 무의식에서부터 의식으로 끊임없이 거쳐온 여행길에서 쌓아온 환상적 지식의 더미를 먼저 내려놓아야 한다. 오직 사랑을 통해서만 그대는 잘못된 지식을 잊기 시작할 수 있고, ‘모르는 모든 것들’의 종말을 가져올 수 있다. 신-사랑(God-Love)은 모든 무지를 꿰뚫는다; 반면 아무리 많은 환상도 신-사랑을 퇴색시킬 순 없다. 먼저 ‘그대가 사랑할 수 없는 사람들을 사랑하는 것’으로, 신에 대한 사랑을 배우기 시작하라. 그대는 다른 사람에 대한 봉사(보시布施)가 곧 자신에 대한 봉사라는 사실을 알게될 것이다. 다른 이를 다정하고 너그러운 마음으로 생각하면 할수록, 그대는 자신을 덜 생각하게 된다; 자신을 완전히 잊어버릴 때, 그대는 모든 사랑의 근원인 나(Baba)를 찾게 될 것이다.

Give up all forms of parrotry. Start practising whatever you truly feel to be true and justly to be just. Do not make a show of your faiths and beliefs. You have not to give up your religion, but to give up clinging to the husk of mere ritual and ceremony. To get to the fundamental core of Truth underlying all religions, reach beyond religion.

앵무새처럼 말만 따라하는 모든 형태의 흉내를 버려라. 지금부터 그대가 진정으로 참되고 옳다고 느끼는 것을 실천하라. 남에게 그대의 신앙과 믿음을 과시하지 말라. 그대의 종교를 버릴 필요는 없다; 다만 겉껍질에 불과한 종교 의식과 형식에 대한 집착만 버리면 된다. 모든 종교의 밑바탕에 깔린 진실(Truth)의 근원적 핵심에 이르기 위해선, 종교를 넘어서야만 한다.

Through endless time God’s greatest gift is continuously given in silence. But when mankind becomes completely deaf to the thunder of His Silence God incarnates as Man. The Unlimited assumes limitation to shake Maya-drugged humanity to a consciousness of its true destiny. He uses a physical body for His universal work, to discard it in final sacrifice as soon as it has served its purpose.

God has come again and again in various Forms, has spoken again and again in different words and different languages the Same One Truth—but how many are there that live up to it? Instead of making Truth the vital breath of his life, man compromises by making over and over againa mechanical religion of it—a handy staff to lean on in times of adversity, a soothing balm for his conscience or a tradition to be followed. Man’s inability to live God’s words, makes a mockery of them. How many Christians follow Christ’s teaching to ‘turn the other cheek’ or to ‘love thy neighbor as thyself’? How many Muslims follow Mohammed’s precept to ‘hold God above everything else’? How many Hindus ‘bear the torch of righteousness at all cost’? How many Buddhists live the ‘life of pure compassion’ expounded by Buddha? How many Zoroastrians ‘think truly, speak truly, act truly’? God’s Truth cannot be ignored. Because men do ignore It a tremendous adverse reaction is produced, and the world finds itself in a cauldron of suffering through hate, conflicting ideologies and war, and nature’s rebellion in the form of floods, famines, earthquakes and other disasters. Ultimately, when the tide of suffering is at its flood, God manifests anew in human form to guide mankind to the destruction of its self-created evil, and re-establish it in the Way of Truth.

My Silence and the imminent breaking of my Silence is to save mankind from the monumental forces of ignorance, and to fulfil the divine Plan of universal unity. The breaking of my Silence will reveal to man the universal Oneness of God, which will bring about the universal brotherhood of man. My Silence had to be. The breaking of my Silence has to be—soon.
